On 20th May, 1915, the 1st Dorset battalion of 15 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into trenches at Hill 60, in the southern part of the Ypres salient, the scene of a recent heavy battle in which they had been engaged. This time the fighting was not so fierce but there were still a number of casualties for the battalion including Harry Church who was killed on 28th May. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
